Horse riding start - Jobahajime
One of the ceremonial events during the samurai era. It is literally an event where a person tries riding a horse for the first time, but it can be broadly divided into two categories: the first riding ceremony as a rite of passage, and the first riding ceremony as an annual event. The former is held around the time of the coming-of-age ceremony, like the hakama ceremony, the detsushi ceremony, and the gohanshi ceremony. According to the Azuma Kagami, the Kamakura Shogun Kujo Yoritsugu had his first riding ceremony at the age of three in 1241 (Ninji 2) thanks to a stipend from Hojo Yasutoki. Ashikaga Yoshihisa also had his first riding ceremony at the age of nine on April 10, 1473 (Bunmei 5). According to the Jotokuin Tonosama Gojohajiki, the ceremony was recorded as follows: Ise Sadamune carried Yoshihisa on the horse, with Sadamune and Ogasawara Tamibu no Shoyu on either side, and Ise Hachirozaemon and Sakyo no Jo on either side of the horse, and they raced around the riding ground about three times.
