Also called "Rikudo-e." These paintings are based on the six paths of reincarnation of all living beings: hell, hungry ghosts, animals, asuras, humans, and heaven. They were mainly produced from the Heian period to the Kamakura period, when faith in the Amida Pure Land was popular, and various aspects of the six paths were depicted on temple walls, folding screens, hanging scrolls, picture scrolls, and inside pages of sutra scrolls. The idea of the six paths also gave rise to faith in the Six Kannon Bodhisattvas, Six Jizo Bodhisattvas, and King Enma, and statues depicting them were also created. Famous relics include "Jigoku Soshi" and "Gaki Soshi." Large works such as "Rokudo-e" (15 scrolls, national treasure) at Shojuraigoji Temple in Shiga Prefecture have also been preserved.
