There he faced fierce resistance from the people, supported by the combined efforts of the oasis dwellers and nomads, led by the local nobleman Spitamenēs, and was forced to fight a hard battle for two years. In the autumn of 327 BC, he invaded northwestern India, aiming to reach the eastern coast of the ocean, and defeated the army of King Porus, who had an elephant unit, at the battle of the Hydaspes (Jhelum) River (326 BC). However, his soldiers, tired from the long campaign, refused to advance, and he gave up continuing his eastward advance at the Hyphasis (Beas) River. …
