A village in Yamagata County, western Hiroshima Prefecture. Population 1,403 (1995). Located on the backbone of the Chugoku Mountains, the Tsutsuga River, a tributary of the Ota River, flows northeast, with the settlement located along the river. Most of the village area is covered by forest, producing cedar and cypress timber. Even in the Edo period, the village sent timber, charcoal, and firewood to Hiroshima Castle. Highland vegetables, wasabi, and shiitake mushrooms are cultivated, and Tsutsuga beef cattle are raised. Cedar and other trees have been preserved in a state close to virgin forest near Ryuzu Gorge on the Mitani River, a tributary of the Tsutsuga River. 広島県西部,山県(やまがた)郡の村。人口1403(1995)。中国山地の脊梁部にあり,太田川の支流筒賀川が北東に流れ,川沿いに集落がある。村域のほとんどが山林で,杉,ヒノキの用材を産し,江戸時代にも用材,炭,薪などを広島城下に送り出していた。高冷地野菜,ワサビ,シイタケの栽培,筒賀肉牛の飼育が行われる。筒賀川の支流三谷川にある竜頭峡付近では杉などが原生林に近い状態で保存されている。JR可部線,中国自動車道,国道186号線が通じる。
