Tsutsuga [village] - Tsutsuga

Japanese: 筒賀[村] - つつが
Tsutsuga [village] - Tsutsuga
A village in Yamagata County, western Hiroshima Prefecture. Population 1,403 (1995). Located on the backbone of the Chugoku Mountains, the Tsutsuga River, a tributary of the Ota River, flows northeast, with the settlement located along the river. Most of the village area is covered by forest, producing cedar and cypress timber. Even in the Edo period, the village sent timber, charcoal, and firewood to Hiroshima Castle. Highland vegetables, wasabi, and shiitake mushrooms are cultivated, and Tsutsuga beef cattle are raised. Cedar and other trees have been preserved in a state close to virgin forest near Ryuzu Gorge on the Mitani River, a tributary of the Tsutsuga River. The village is accessible by the JR Kabe Line, the Chugoku Expressway, and National Route 186.
