This former town is located in Amakusa County, Kumamoto Prefecture, and is made up of Oyano Island and Senzokuzozo Island in the northern part of the Amakusa Islands. It is a pioneering dairy farming area in the prefecture, with many dairy cows raised and flowers and fruit grown on terraced fields. The fishing industry is also active, with shrimp farmed. One of the town's specialties is whetstones. It is home to the Amakusa Five Bridges, and serves as the starting point for tourism in Amakusa. In March 2004, it merged with Matsushima Town, Himeto Town, and Ryugatake Town in Amakusa County to form Kamiamakusa City. 37.97 km2 . Population: 17,846 (2003).
