A Spanish literary society founded in 1820. Its popularity waned during the dictatorship of Ferdinand VII, which began in 1823, but it was legally recognized in 1835 and served as the center of intellectual activity in the fields of science, literature, and art until around 1930. As a reaction against 18th-century academism, it represented the spirit of 19th-century romanticism. Rather than an academic society, it was more of a gathering of free intellectuals, and its main activities were opening its library, which had a large collection of books from both within Spain and abroad, and holding lectures and roundtable discussions. Through these activities, it sought to stimulate and direct Spanish thought, and maintain a liberal spirit and a stance of resistance against established power.
