An instrumental form established during the Baroque period. The two acoustic bodies required for a concerto are each performed by multiple players, and are characterized by a contrast in volume between a small group (called a "soli" or "concertino") and a large group (called a "ripieno" or "concerto grosso"), or between a small group and a full ensemble. The Italian word "concerto grosso" (concerto grosso) is a metaphor for the form of a concerto ensemble. A typical example of this is Corelli's "Concerto grosso", Op. 6 (1714), and it was inherited by Handel and others. During the Classical and Romantic periods, it was replaced by the solo concerto, but in the 20th century, this form was taken up again by Bloch, Martinő, Krsenek, Schnittke, and others. The symphony concertante, derived from the concerto grosso, also appeared in the second half of the 18th century as a transitional style, with works written by the Stamitz brothers, Mozart, and others. Like the concerto grosso, it fell out of fashion during the Romantic period, but later F. Martin and others left behind excellent works using this form. Incidentally, the Italian word concertino came to be used as a title for a work in the 19th century, in the sense of a "small concerto." →Concerto→Related topicsSymphony|Torelli Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
