A port city in the western part of the Republic of Gabon, in west-central Africa, it is also a commercial and industrial center. Population 81,000 (1993). It is a natural harbor on the Lopez Peninsula, which juts out into the Atlantic Ocean from the mouth of the Ogoué River, and has port facilities specializing in the export of timber, as well as a large plywood factory and factories for ship repair and palm oil extraction. With the development of oil fields offshore, an oil refinery was built and the city has developed as an export port for oil and petroleum products. There is also an international airport. アフリカ中西部，ガボン共和国西部の港湾都市で，商工業の中心でもある。人口8万1000(1993)。オゴウェ川河口から大西洋に突出したロペス半島にある天然の良港で，木材の輸出を専門とする港湾施設をもち，大規模な合板工場をはじめ，船舶修理，ヤシ油搾油などの工場がある。沖合に油田が開発されて石油精製工場も建設され，石油や石油製品の輸出港としても発展するにいたった。国際空港もある。【西野照太郎】
