A port city in the western part of the Republic of Gabon, in west-central Africa, it is also a commercial and industrial center. Population 81,000 (1993). It is a natural harbor on the Lopez Peninsula, which juts out into the Atlantic Ocean from the mouth of the Ogoué River, and has port facilities specializing in the export of timber, as well as a large plywood factory and factories for ship repair and palm oil extraction. With the development of oil fields offshore, an oil refinery was built and the city has developed as an export port for oil and petroleum products. There is also an international airport.
