Ogawa Imosen - Ogawa Sen
Born: 18th February 1868 in Edo
[Died] December 17, 1938. Japanese painter in Ushiku, Ibaraki. Eldest son of Ogawa Kenkatsu, a senior vassal of the Yamaguchi clan of Ushiku Domain. His name was Fudo Taro, later Mokichi. His pen names were Ushizato, Kusajiruan, Imozen, and Kyosoushi. After the abolition of the feudal domains and the establishment of prefectures, he moved from Edo to Ushiku Village, Ibaraki Prefecture. Around 1880, he studied under Honda Kinkichirō. In 1888, he serialized sketch cartoons in the Asano Shimbun, using the pen name Imozen. Since 1896, he has mainly lived in Ushiku, and worked on painting while doing farm work. He also contributed satirical cartoons and illustrations with the theme of farmers to the Ibaraki Nippo, Heimin Shimbun, and the magazine Bungeikai. In 1915, he formed the Sango-kai with Hirafuku Hyakusui and Kawabata Ryushi. In 1917, he was recognized by Yokoyama Taikan and became a member of the Japan Art Academy. He expanded his horizons from manga to haiku and literati painting, while establishing a unique style full of fantasy and humor. He is especially known as a master of kappa painting. His major works include "Conversation of a Stone Man Under a Tree" (1919), "A Wood Spirit Steaming in Young Leaves" (21), "Playing with the Water Fairies" (23, Ibaraki Prefectural Museum of Modern Art), and "Evening Calm" (24).

日本画家。牛久藩山口家の重臣小川賢勝の長男。名は不動太郎のち茂吉。号は牛里,草汁庵,芋銭,きょ滄子。廃藩置県で江戸から茨城県牛久村に移住。 1880年頃本多錦吉郎に師事。 88年『朝野新聞』にスケッチ漫画を連載し,芋銭の号を使用。 96年以降は主として牛久に住み,農事のかたわら画業に励んだ。また『茨城日報』『平民新聞』,雑誌『文芸界』などに,農民を主題とした風刺的な漫画や挿絵を寄稿。 1915年平福百穂,川端龍子らと珊瑚会を結成。 17年横山大観に認められ日本美術院同人となり,漫画から俳画,文人画へと画境を広げつつ,幻想とユーモアにあふれた特異な画風を築き,特に河童絵の名人として有名。主要作品『樹下石人談』 (1919) ,『若葉に蒸さるる木精』 (21) ,『水魅戯』 (23,茨城県立近代美術館) ,『夕凪』 (24) 。
