A perennial plant of the ginger family with fragrant white flowers (illustration). A pseudostem with overlapping petioles 1-2 m tall emerges from a branched underground stem, and the leaves grow alternately in two rows. The leaf blade is oblong to oblong, hairy, and 30-60 cm long. The inflorescence emerges from the apex of the stem and forms a raceme, surrounded by numerous green, boat-shaped bracts. The flower has a long tube of about 10 cm, with broad linear tepals and a large, conspicuous white lip that opens flat. It blooms year-round in the tropics and from summer to early autumn in Japan. It is believed to have originated somewhere from India to the Indochina Peninsula, but is now widely cultivated for cut flowers and as an ornamental plant.
