Toraya Eikan

Japanese:
Toraya Eikan
Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A tayu of old Joruri in the early Edo period, founder of Eikan-bushi. Until the beginning of the Genroku period (1688-1704), he was one of the three Edo Joruri troupes alongside Tosa Shojo Masakatsu and Sakurai Tanba Shojo, and was active during the Kanbun to Genroku periods (1661-1704), performing puppet plays (Edo Zukan Komoku). A disciple of Toraya Gendayu in Edo, he was originally called Toraya Kogentayu, but there is some doubt about this. Around 1669 (Kanbun 9), he changed his name to Eikan. His skills are unknown, but he left behind a melody called Eikan-bushi. It is said that Toraya Kimoto was one of his disciples. <References> Shinshu Eiri Joruri-shi (Newly Revised History of Illustrated Joruri) (Mizutani Futo Works Collection, Vol. 4)
