It is said that the English word "hard-boiled" first took on the nuance of being ruthless or cruel in the late 19th century, but in America it began as a literary term and was later adapted to film as well, with films that have a ruthless or cruel touch being given this name. As the typical protagonist is a lone-wolf private detective, the film was given the name "hard-boiled detective film" and came to be regarded as a genre in its own right, a variation of the detective film.
