1397-1450 The fourth king of the Joseon Dynasty. Reigned 1418-50.
Born on April 10th, 6th year of the reign of King Taejo. Son of King Taejong. Known as a great ruler, he is known for establishing the Hunminjeongeum (Hangul) system. He attacked Tsushima, which he considered to be the base of the Japanese pirates (the Oei Invasions), but later opened three ports, including Toyama-ura, and expanded friendly and commercial relations with Japan through the So clan of Tsushima Island. Died on February 17th, 32nd year of the reign of King Sejong. He was 54 years old. His surname was Yi and his given name was To.

太祖6年4月10日生まれ。太宗の子。名君といわれ訓民正音(ハングル)の制定で知られる。倭寇(わこう)の本拠地とみなした対馬(つしま)を襲撃(応永の外寇(がいこう))したが,のち富山浦など三浦(さんぽ)を開港し,対馬島主宗(そう)氏を介して日本との修好通商関係を拡大した。世宗32年2月17日死去。54歳。姓は李。諱(いみな)は祹(とう)。
