Japanese: 人食い妹 - ひとくいいもうと

This Japanese folk tale is also known as "The Little Sister is a Demon" and is found in abundance in Kyushu, especially in Kagoshima Prefecture. When an older brother finds out that his younger sister has gone out in the middle of the night, he follows her, only to find that she has eaten a horse, and he warns his parents that his sister is a demon. The parents become angry and banish the older brother. When the older brother returns home a while later, he finds that the village is deserted, and that only his younger sister is at home, telling him to keep watch over the fire and beat a drum while they make tea. As the older brother does as he is told, his parents appear as white mice and tell him to run away, as they will beat the drum with their tails for him.

日本の昔話としては〈妹は鬼〉ともいい，九州，とくに鹿児島県に多く分布している。妹が夜中に外出するのを知った兄が後をつけると，妹は馬を食ったので，親に妹は鬼だと警告する。親は逆に怒り，兄を追放する。兄がしばらくして家に戻ってみると，村に人影はなく，家には妹だけがいて，茶を入れる間，太鼓を打ちながら火の番をしろという。兄がそのとおりにしていると，両親が白鼠になって現れ，代りに尻尾で太鼓を打ってやるから逃げろという。
