Yagen [Hot Spring] - Yagen

Japanese: 薬研[温泉] - やげん

This hot spring is located at the northern foot of Mount Osore on the Shimokita Peninsula in northern Aomori Prefecture. It belongs to Ohata Town, Shimokita District. Simple spring water, 47°C. The area is surrounded by broadleaf beech and maple trees in a deep mountain valley, where the Ohata River flows, creating waterfalls and streams. The hot spring is said to have been discovered in 1614 (Keicho 19), and was named after the side outlet, which resembles a mortar used to grind medicinal herbs into powder. A motorway was completed in 1965, and a hotel, resort, and national campground were built there. Another 2km upstream is Okuyagen Onsen (simple spring water, 57°C).

青森県北部，下北半島の恐山北麓にある温泉。下北郡大畑町に属する。単純泉，47℃。付近はブナやカエデの広葉樹に包まれた山間の深い谷をなし，大畑川が滝や渓流をつくって流れている。温泉の発見は1614年(慶長19)といわれ，わき口が薬草を粉末にする薬研に似ているところから名付けられた。1965年自動車道が完成し，ホテルや保養所，国営キャンプ場がつくられた。さらに2km上流には奥薬研温泉(単純泉，57℃)がある。
