?-1222 Byzantine Emperor. Reigned 1204-22. Son-in-law of Alexios III. After the fall of the Byzantine capital to the Fourth Crusade in April 1204, he fled to Nicaea in Anatolia, where he united the remaining Byzantine forces and established a government in exile. In 1211, he defeated the Seljuk army of Rum, and established a peace treaty with the Latin Empire (1214) and a friendship treaty with Venice (1219), thereby establishing his position as a government in exile. He succeeded in making Nicaea the base for the Byzantine restoration movement. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
