Byzantine Emperor. Reigned 1204-22. Son-in-law of Alexios III. After the fall of the Byzantine capital to the Fourth Crusade in April 1204, he fled to Nicaea in Anatolia, where he united the remaining Byzantine forces and established a government in exile. In 1211, he defeated the Seljuk army of Rum, and established a peace treaty with the Latin Empire (1214) and a friendship treaty with Venice (1219), thereby establishing his position as a government in exile. He succeeded in making Nicaea the base for the Byzantine restoration movement.

ビザンティン帝国の皇帝。在位1204‐22年。アレクシオス3世の義理の息子。1204年4月の第4回十字軍による首都陥落後アナトリアのニカエアに逃れ，この地にビザンティン帝国の残存勢力を結集し亡命政権を樹立。1211年ルーム･セルジューク軍を破り，ラテン帝国と和平条約(1214)を，ベネチアとは友好条約(1219)を締結してその地位を確立し，ニカエアをビザンティン帝国復興運動の拠点とすることに成功した。
