Piyyut

...For example, it is a well-known fact in the history of Western music that the Gregorian psalm chant is based on Jewish chanting. In the 6th century, under the influence of Byzantine and Arabic traditions, the metrical hymn (Piyyut) was born among the Jews of Spain, adding a new repertoire to synagogue music. Next, choral masters (Hazan), who were both poets and singers specializing in this hymn, were born, and they subsequently captivated the congregations with their improvisational, virtuoso singing style, using their natural beautiful voices.
