Abbreviation for Petróleos Brasileiros, SA, the Brazilian state-owned oil company. A state-owned company established in 1953. The 1988 constitution gave the company a monopoly on oil and gas exploration, development, and refining, as well as the import and export of petroleum products, but the Cardoso administration amended the constitution to partially open up the oil industry to private and foreign companies. In 1996, gross sales were $23.7 billion, with crude oil production of 810,000 barrels per day (74% of which was from the continental shelf), and natural gas production of 25.2 million ^km3 per day. The company also has 11 refineries with a refining capacity of 154,000 barrels per day.

ブラジル石油公社Petróleos Brasileiros,S.A.の略称。1953年設立の国営企業。88年憲法により石油･ガスの探鉱･開発･精製，石油製品の輸出入は同社の独占とされたが，カルドーゾ政権で憲法修正が行われ，石油産業を民間･外国企業に一部開放することになった。96年の粗売上高は237億ドル，原油生産81万バレル/日(うち74％は陸棚から)，天然ガス生産2520万km³/日である。また，同社は11の精油所を有し，精製能力は15万4000バレル/日である。
