Abbreviation for Petróleos Brasileiros, SA, the Brazilian state-owned oil company. A state-owned company established in 1953. The 1988 constitution gave the company a monopoly on oil and gas exploration, development, and refining, as well as the import and export of petroleum products, but the Cardoso administration amended the constitution to partially open up the oil industry to private and foreign companies. In 1996, gross sales were $23.7 billion, with crude oil production of 810,000 barrels per day (74% of which was from the continental shelf), and natural gas production of 25.2 million km3 per day. The company also has 11 refineries with a refining capacity of 154,000 barrels per day. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
