Bromic Acid - Bromic Acid

Japanese:
Bromic Acid - Bromic Acid

Bromine oxoacids include monooxobromate(I) acid, HBrO (commonly known as hypobromous acid), dioxobromate(III) acid, HBrO2 (commonly known as bromous acid), trioxobromate (V) acid, HBrO3 (commonly known as bromic acid), and tetraoxobromate(VII) acid, HBrO4 (commonly known as perbromic acid), all of which exist only as aqueous solutions. Of these, the term bromic acid refers to HBr O3 . HBrO3 (128.91) is obtained from the filtrate of the reaction of barium bromate , Ba( BrO3 ) 2 , with sulfuric acid. When evaporated under reduced pressure at low temperatures, a viscous aqueous solution of about 50% is obtained. It is colorless when pure, but if left at room temperature it will partially decompose and turn pale yellow, so it should be stored at low temperatures. If heated above 40°C it will decompose, producing Br2 and O2 . It is a strong acid. It is a strong oxidizing agent, and will oxidize H2S and SO2 to H2SO4 , H2O2 to O2 , and HCl, HBr, and HI to Cl2 , Br2 , and I2, respectively. The oxidation reaction of HI proceeds quantitatively, so it is used in the quantitative analysis of bromate. It is used as an oxidizing agent in the intermediate process of dye synthesis reactions. It is hazardous to the skin and mucous membranes. Toxic. [CAS 7789-31-3]
