Born: September 1596, London [Died] October 29, 1666, London. English playwright. He studied at Cambridge University and became an Anglican clergyman and grammar school principal in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, but later converted to Catholicism. He then moved to London and wrote about 40 plays between 1625 and 1642. He showed the same elegance and fluency in his seven surviving tragedies (such as The Traytor (1631)), ten comedies of manners (such as The Lady of Pleasure (1635)), and fourteen romantic comedies (such as The Imposture (1640)), as well as masques (such as The Triumph of Peace (1634)). Although he lacked originality, he was called "the last Elizabethan writer" for his skillful incorporation of the technical heritage of the past. Shirley |
