...The party had a central organ, the Vorwärts (Forward) (160,000 subscribers in 1914), as well as local organs (90 daily newspapers in 1913), and the theoretical journal Die Neue Zeit (New Era) (founded in 1883, edited by Kautsky until 1917) had a circulation of over 10,000 in 1911. The Free Trade Unions (Freie Gewerkschaften), which were essentially established in 1890, maintained close ties with the Social Democratic Party and grew into a centralized, industrial organization with 2.5 million members by 1913. Internationally, the party was also important as a leading force in the Second International.
