A squid of the Cephalopoda family (illustration). Due to its long and slender body, it has local names such as Sasaika, Sayanaga, Teppo, Tenashi, Tsutsuika, and Shakuhachiika. The mantle of males can reach 40cm in length, but females are somewhat thicker and shorter. The arms and tentacles are short and weak. The fins are long and slender diamond-shaped, with a fleshy ridge running down the center of the ventral side of the mantle. The arms have two rows of suckers, and the horny rings have 7 to 12 blunt teeth. The tentacles have four rows of suckers, and 20 to 30 blunt teeth. They are distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu and Indonesia.

頭足綱ヤリイカ科のイカ（イラスト）。体が細長いところから，ササイカ，サヤナガ，テッポウ，テナシ，ツツイカ，シャクハチイカなどの地方名がある。外套（がいとう）長は雄で40cmになるが，雌はいくぶん太くて短い。腕も触腕も短く弱い。ひれは細長いひし形で，外套膜の腹側中央に肉質のうねが走る。腕の吸盤は2列で，角質環は7～12の鈍歯がある。触腕の吸盤は4列で，20～30の鈍歯がある。北海道から九州，インドネシアまで分布する。
