A marine animal belonging to the phylum Echinodermata, class Echinoidea, order Polypodinae. Although it is a member of the sea urchin family, its shell is irregularly swollen and covered with light brown hair-like spines. It is 3 to 4 centimeters in size and lives buried deep in the mud. This species normally lives in temperate to subarctic waters at depths of a few to 200 meters, and is found from Hokkaido to the southern tip of Kyushu, the Korean Peninsula, the coast of China, as well as the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. With the spines removed, the shell has strange bulges and grooves, resembling a mask of a female Okama, hence the name.
