A cellist from Austria. Along with Casals, he is one of the leading figures in the cello world in the first half of the 20th century. Born in Kolomyia (now part of Ukraine) in the Galician region, he moved to Vienna with his family at the age of seven. He was taught the cello by his father, and made his debut at the age of 11, performing with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Weingartner. He studied under the famous cellist J. Klengel (1859-1933) at the Leipzig Conservatory, and while performing, he also taught at the Berlin Higher School of Music and other institutions. In 1933, he was fired from his job by the Nazis, and after performing all over the world, he settled in the United States in 1938 and obtained citizenship. After moving to the United States, he performed as a soloist and also performed in chamber music with Schnabel, Heifetz, Rubinstein, Primrose, and others, and gained fame for his powerful technique and large-scale expression. He died suddenly at the age of 39 due to a failed surgery. He visited Japan in 1934 and 1936. →Toch→Related items Cello | Piatigorsky Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
