Born: 1902/1903 Tacarigua [Died] September 23, 1959, Accra A representative Pan-Africanist from the late 1930s to the late 1950s. His real name was Malcolm Ivan Meredith Nurse. He was of African descent from Trinidad. He graduated from Pamfilian High School and worked at a publishing company for a time. He moved to the United States in 1924 and studied law at Fisk University, New York University, and Howard University Law School. He joined the Communist Party of America in 1927. In 1928, he changed his name and became editor of the party's newspaper for black people in Harlem, the Negro Champion (renamed the Liberator in 1929). In 1929, he attended the second conference of the League for National Independence against Imperialism (LAI), and thereafter worked mainly in Europe to link the communist movement with the black movement. In 1930, he made an effort to organize the first International Conference of Black Workers. Around the time of his expulsion from Comintern in June 1934, he became more inclined towards Pan-Africanism, and contributed to the establishment of the Pan-African League at the end of 1944. He continued to be devoted to the Pan-African movement, mainly in London, and in 1957 he moved to independent Ghana, where, as a political advisor to Nkrumah, he played a major role in convening the First African Conference (April 1958) and the First All-African People's Conference (December 1958).
