Shari [town] - Shari

Japanese: 斜里[町] - しゃり

A town in Shari District, eastern Hokkaido. Facing the Sea of Okhotsk, it includes the western half of the Shiretoko Peninsula. The Senmo Main Line runs through it. It has been a fishing ground since the Edo period, but the area has been relatively recently reclaimed. Potatoes, sugar beets, and beans are grown, and set-net fishing for salmon and trout is also practiced. The peninsula is part of Shiretoko National Park. In 2005, Shiretoko was added to the list of natural heritage under the World Heritage Convention. 737.12 ^km2 . Population: 13,045 (2010).

北海道東部，斜里郡の町。オホーツク海に面し，知床(しれとこ)半島の西半分を含む。釧網(せんもう)本線が通じる。江戸時代からの漁場であるが，開墾は比較的新しい。ジャガイモ，テンサイ，豆類が作られ，サケ，マスの定置網漁業も行われる。半島部は知床国立公園に属する。2005年知床が世界遺産条約の自然遺産リストに登録された。737.12km²。１万3045人（2010）。
