A former town in Kuga County, eastern Yamaguchi Prefecture. Occupying the midstream of the Nishiki River, the main settlement of Hirose is near the confluence of the Nishiki River with its tributary, the Usa River, and is the terminus of the Nishiki River Railway. The town practices agriculture and forestry, and is known for its wasabi and konjac. There are many scenic spots, including Mount Jakuchi and Kitani Gorge in the West Chugoku Mountains Quasi-National Park. In March 2006, the town was incorporated into Iwakuni City along with the towns of Yu, Kuga, Shuto, Mikawa, Miwa, and Hongo in Kuga County. Area: 210.32 km2 . Population: 4,103 (2003).

Nishiki [town] [Nishiki]

A town in Kuma District, southern Kumamoto Prefecture. The main settlement is in the Hitoyoshi Basin, and the Kuma River Railway runs through it. The northern part along the Kuma River is dominated by rice paddies, while the southern part is farmland, with fruit cultivation thriving. Tea is also cultivated, and pears and peaches are specialty products. 85.04 km2 . Population 11,075 (2010).

熊本県南部,球磨(くま)郡の町。主集落は人吉盆地にあり,くま川鉄道が通じる。球磨川に沿う北部は水田が多く,南部は畑作地で,果樹栽培が盛ん。茶の栽培も行い,ナシ,モモを特産する。85.04km2。1万1075人(2010)。
