Phycomycetes, order Entomophytic Phycomycetes, family Entomophyceae. It parasitizes houseflies and other flies. When this fungus grows inside the host body, the fly loses its activity and dies while resting on the underside of the leaves of aquatic plants. At this time, the hyphae emerge from the spiracles of the insect's body, producing a mycelial layer on its surface, on which conidiophores grow densely and bear multinucleate conidia. The elasticity of the conidiophores allows the conidia to be ejected forward, and when they hit the fly's body, they extend their appressorium and release a sticky substance to adhere to the chitin layer, then mechanically penetrate it. All fungi in this family parasitize insects, and about 100 species are known. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
