French fashion designer. One of the most representative designers of the 20th century. Nicknamed Coco Chanel. Starting out as a hat designer, she introduced functional and simple jersey clothing that reflected the social changes after World War I, and introduced a new concept of femininity. She was active from the 1920s to the 1930s, and is known for her diverse friendships, from artists such as Picasso and Cocteau to aristocrats. After World War II, she took a break from creative activities, but when she returned in 1954, she started the worldwide Chanel suit boom of the 1960s, and reigned as the queen of Parisian fashion until just before her death. Her consistent fashion philosophy of "clothes for working women" gave birth to the cardigan-type so-called "Chanel suit," which is highly regarded as the prototype of 20th century women's clothing. Her achievements also include the idea of ​​costume jewelry that emphasizes decorativeness, and the launch of the perfume "Chanel No. 5," named after haute couture. Karl Lagerfeld (1933-2019), who was appointed designer for Chanel stores in 1983, once again sparked a worldwide boom in Chanel suits.
