[Died] December 9, 1975, Los Angeles. American film director. Highly regarded for his solid yet versatile style, he established the aviation film genre during the silent era by turning aerial combat into a spectacle. Wings (1927, Academy Award for Best Picture) is his signature work. At the height of his powers in the 1930s, he produced gangster films such as The Public Enemy (31), social dramas such as Heroes for Sale (33), and other masterpieces such as A Star is Born (37).
