Al‐Azhar

Japanese: アズハル（英語表記）al‐Azhar

It consists of an old mosque (established in 970) and an associated madrasah (established in 972) in Cairo, Egypt, and is considered the oldest surviving Islamic institution of learning. The madrasah has been run by long-standing waqf funds from all over the Islamic world, and continued to exist even under the Ottoman Empire, when the Arabic language declined in the Islamic world, and has well transmitted traditional Arabic and Islamic studies to the present day. The university was separated from the mosque by a decree in 1936 and reorganized into the three traditional faculties: the Faculty of Islamic Law, the Faculty of Theology, and the Faculty of Arabic Language.

エジプトのカイロにある古いモスク(970設立)とそれに付随するマドラサ(972設立)とからなり，現存するイスラム最古の最高学府とされている。マドラサは全イスラム世界からの長年のワクフ財産によって運営されてきたが，イスラム世界でアラビア語が衰退したオスマン帝国下においても存続し，よく伝統的アラブ･イスラム諸学を今日に伝えた。大学は1936年の法令によってモスクより分離し，イスラム法学部，神学部，アラビア語学部(伝統3学部)として新たに再編成された。
