It was the base of a sermonist whose founder, Choken, was the founder of this temple, and so this line of sermons is called the Agoin school. Choken studied the Tendai teachings of the Dan'na school on Mount Hiei, and was known for his scholarship and eloquence. He was appointed Daisozu and Hoin, but he retreated to Agoin and gained a reputation for educating people with his sermons, which were centered on elegantly expressed hyobiyakufujumon (fairy tales of truth) and witty tales of parables. …

...Kei, who is said to have been a master of chanting, was said to have had the honor of "the first to cry," which indicates that a master of chanting would cry himself and make the audience cry as well. Chanting attracted attention because of the activities of the master Hoin Choken from the end of the Heian period to the beginning of the Kamakura period, and his descendants formed a sect of chanting called the Agui school. This was because Choken and his eldest son, Seikaku, were scholars and oratorical geniuses descended from their ancestor Fujiwara Michinori (Shinzei). ...
