Dream of Kantan - Kantan no Yume

A metaphor for the transience of the rise and fall of the human world. It is also called "A Dream of a Single Bowl," "The Pillow of the Dream of Handan," or "Rosei's Dream." During the Kaiyuan era of the Tang Dynasty in China (713-741), a poor young man named Rosei met the Taoist priest Roo in Handan, the capital of Zhao. He borrowed a miraculous pillow that Roo had in his pocket, which was said to grant one all sorts of glory and splendor. While he was dozing off, he dreamed of a life of 50 years of ultimate wealth and prosperity. However, when he woke up, the huangliang (millet) that the innkeeper had been cooking was not yet done. This is based on a story from Li Bi's "Records of the Pillow."

人の世の栄枯盛衰のはかないことのたとえ。「一炊(いっすい)の夢」「邯鄲夢の枕(まくら)」「盧生(ろせい)の夢」などともいう。中国唐の開元年間（713～741）、盧生という貧乏な青年が、趙(ちょう)の都邯鄲で道士呂翁(りょおう)と会い、呂翁が懐中していた、栄華が思いのままになるという不思議な枕を借り、うたた寝をする間に、50余年の富貴を極めた一生の夢をみることができたが、夢から覚めてみると、宿の亭主が先ほどから炊いていた黄粱(こうりゃん)（粟(あわ)）がまだできあがっていなかった、という李泌(りひつ)作の『枕中記(ちんちゅうき)』の故事による。
