Usama b. Munqidh

A Syrian knight and man of letters. He was a member of the Munkiz family, lords of Shaizar Castle near Hama. After serving the Zengids of Mosul and fighting the Crusaders, he lived in Damascus from 1138 and formed friendships with the Crusader knights. In 1144, he moved to Cairo under the Fatimid dynasty, but was caught up in internal conflicts at the palace and returned to Damascus ten years later. In 1162, he accompanied Nur al-Din to the siege of Antioch, and after a period of retirement in Diyar Bakr, he returned to Damascus in 1174 and served Salah al-Din (Saladin).

シリアの騎士，文人。ハマー近郊のシャイザル城主であったムンキズ家の出身で，モースルのザンギー朝君主に仕えて十字軍と戦った後，1138年からダマスクスに住んで十字軍騎士と親交を結んだ。44年にファーティマ朝治下のカイロへ移ったが，宮廷の内紛に巻き込まれて10年後にダマスクスへ戻り，62年にはヌール･アッディーンに従ってアンティオキアの攻略戦に参加，ディヤール･バクルでの隠退生活を経て，74年再びダマスクスに戻り，サラーフ･アッディーン(サラディン)に仕えた。
