A lizard of the Chamaeleonidae family in the reptile class (illustration), in which males have three horn-like protrusions. It is about 30 cm long, and its tail is just over half that length. It is found in the highlands of Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa. It lives in trees and preys mainly on insects. Only males have horn-like protrusions; females lack them, making them look like a different species. The horns are bony and covered with a horny sheath; they are modified parts of the skull, with two protruding between the eyes and one protruding from the tip of the snout. Males use the horns in territorial disputes and in fights with intruders, but they also serve to blur the outline of the head and deflect attacks from enemies.
