In the case of a contract of insurance, the insurer is a party that undertakes to indemnify the insured in the case of non-life insurance and pay the contracted amount in the case of life insurance when an insured event occurs. In addition to this main obligation, the insurer is also obligated to issue insurance policies (Commercial Code, Articles 649, 683, 655), to return insurance premiums in certain cases (Articles 643, 683, 655), to refund reserves or surrender values (Articles 683, 680, 655), and has the right to claim insurance premiums (Articles 629, 673). Insurers of private insurance are limited to joint stock companies and mutual companies (Insurance Business Act 3).
