Southwestern Yi (English spelling)

Japanese: 西南夷 - せいなんい(英語表記)Xī nán yí
Southwestern Yi (English spelling)
A general term for the non-Han people who lived in ancient China, mainly in the southern part of Sichuan Province and in Yunnan and Guizhou Provinces. They belonged to the Tibetan, Dai, and Miao ethnic groups. There were many tribes, including the Dian, Sui, Airang, Ranmou, Qiong, and Sak, each of which was divided into several tribes with different customs and languages. There were transportation routes from Sichuan Province through the Southwestern Yi to Burma and India, and to Panyu (Guangzhou City) in South Vietnam, which played an important role in the exchange of cultural artifacts.
