…In the 19th century, irrigation therapy was used, in which patients were placed in iron cages and cold water was poured over their heads. In 1933, M. J. Sakel invented insulin shock therapy. It was shown that repeated subcutaneous or intramuscular injections of insulin to induce hypoglycemic coma improved the symptoms of schizophrenia, and this was considered a breakthrough in the physical treatment of mental illness.
