Proletarian revolution - English spelling: proletarian revolution

Proletarian revolution - English spelling: proletarian revolution

This term was used from the 19th century through the 1920s to mean socialist revolution in contrast to bourgeois revolution. Because socialist revolution was understood to be a revolution by the proletariat, meaning the working class, the term proletarian revolution was widely used in Russia after the October Revolution of 1917 and in the international communist movement thereafter. However, soldiers also took part in the Russian October Revolution, the majority of whom were peasants, so this revolution had the character of being a revolution by workers and peasants, not just by the proletariat.

The term proletarian revolution gradually fell out of use after the 1930s, and has hardly been used since World War II. This is because, first, proletariat was traditionally used to mean factory workers, but modern socialist revolutions are considered to be revolutions by the working class in a broader sense, including workers in the tertiary industry sector and administrative staff, and second, although modern revolutions are played by the working class in a central role, it is now generally recognized that they are revolutions in which the middle class also participate.
