Kirishima [town] - Kirishima

Japanese: 霧島[町] - きりしま

A former town in Aira County in the northeastern part of Kagoshima Prefecture. It occupies the southwestern part of Mount Kirishima and the Shirasu plateau at its foot. The central town is Toriimae-cho, the site of Kirishima Shrine, and the town is bustling as a tourist base for hot springs and Kirishima-Yaku National Park (now Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park), with hot spring water drawn from Yunono Onsen in the Kirishima Onsen Village. The Nippo Main Line runs through the southern part of the town. The town produces rice, vegetables, sweet potatoes, and tobacco leaves. In November 2005, it merged with Kokubu City, Aira County's Mizobe Town, Yokokawa Town, Makuzono Town, Hayato Town, and Fukuyama Town to become a city, Kirishima City. Area: ^{82.54 km2} . Population: 5,813 (2003).

鹿児島県北東部，姶良(あいら)郡の旧町。霧島山の南西部と山麓のシラス台地を占める。中心市街は霧島神宮の鳥居前町で，また霧島温泉郷の湯之野温泉から引湯され，温泉地，霧島屋久国立公園（現・霧島錦江湾国立公園）の観光基地としてにぎわう。南部に日豊本線が通じる。米，野菜，サツマイモ，葉タバコを産する。2005年11月，国分市，姶良郡溝辺町，横川町，牧園町，隼人町，福山町と合併し市制，霧島市となる。82.54km²。5813人（2003）。
