A former town in Aira County in the northeastern part of Kagoshima Prefecture. It occupies the southwestern part of Mount Kirishima and the Shirasu plateau at its foot. The central town is Toriimae-cho, the site of Kirishima Shrine, and the town is bustling as a tourist base for hot springs and Kirishima-Yaku National Park (now Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park), with hot spring water drawn from Yunono Onsen in the Kirishima Onsen Village. The Nippo Main Line runs through the southern part of the town. The town produces rice, vegetables, sweet potatoes, and tobacco leaves. In November 2005, it merged with Kokubu City, Aira County's Mizobe Town, Yokokawa Town, Makuzono Town, Hayato Town, and Fukuyama Town to become a city, Kirishima City. Area: 82.54 km2 .
