Born: May 1559, Kyoto [Died] May 16, 1623 (Genwa 9). Edo Go Master. Formerly known as Kano. He entered the Buddhist priesthood under his uncle, Niben, the founder of Jakkoji Temple, while studying Go under Sen'ya in Sakai. In June 1582 (Tensho 10), on the eve of the Honnoji Incident, he was summoned by Oda Nobunaga through the introduction of Kashio Toshikata (not to be confused with his future rival, Teri Genbo), and is said to have scored three ko in a game against Kashio (→ ko). The following year he was summoned by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who favored him, and in the 16th year of the same year he was given a certificate that no one had a black hand (except for his master Sen'ya, who played with a tagaisen), a red seal ordering the rules for Go players, and a stipend of 20 koku and 20 people. It is merely an exaggeration to say that this was the beginning of the Go school. He was also well received by Tokugawa Ieyasu, and accompanied him to Edo when the shogunate was established in February 1603. Sansha was good at both go and shogi, and initially served as the general supervisor of the go and shogi players. He introduced his friend Ohashi Sokei to Ieyasu, who then took over the position of supervisor. After Ieyasu unified the country, Sansha's stipend was increased by an additional 300 koku to 350 koku and 20 people's support. He died in Edo and was buried at Jakko-ji Temple. At the time, Sansha was not the head of a school, and the title of Honinbo was limited to one generation, but in 1630, Nakamura Doseki, Sansha's top disciple who had been given the title of Meijin, applied to the shogunate and made Sanetsu the second Honinbo.
