Jacksonville - Jacksonville (English spelling)

A commercial and industrial city in northeastern Florida, United States. Population 735,617 (2000). It is the state's largest city and the second largest in the United States in terms of area (2,264 square kilometers). Located near the mouth of the St. John River, it is also a trading port. Its main exports are lumber, sulfur, paper products, chemical products, and pulp, while its main imports are coffee and automobiles. Its main industries are lumber, paper, chemical products, food, and cigars. It is a key hub for rail, air, and road transportation on the southern Atlantic coast, and one of the centers of commerce, finance, and insurance in the southeastern United States. It is also a resort town with beautiful sandy beaches and facilities for yachting and fishing.

The settlement was established in 1816 and became a city in 1832. The town was named after the seventh president, A. Jackson. The development of railroads and ports in the late 19th century led to the development of commerce and industry. It is the home of Jacksonville University, Edward Walters University, and Jones University, and is also the site of the Gator Bowl, a national college football tournament.

アメリカ合衆国、フロリダ州北東部の商工業都市。人口73万5617（2000）。州最大の都市で、面積（2264平方キロメートル）は合衆国第2位である。セント・ジョン川の河口付近に位置し、貿易港でもある。木材、硫黄(いおう)、紙製品、化学製品、パルプなどが主要輸出品で、コーヒーや自動車が主要輸入品になっている。主要な工業には木材、製紙、化学製品、食品、葉巻たばこがある。南部大西洋岸の鉄道・航空・道路交通の要衝であり、合衆国南東部の商業、金融・保険業の中心地の一つである。美しい砂浜とヨットや釣りの施設を備えた保養地でもある。

　1816年集落が建設され、32年に市となった。地名は第7代大統領A・ジャクソンにちなむ。19世紀後半の鉄道と港の発展により、商工業が発達した。ジャクソンビル大学、エドワード・ウォルターズ大学、ジョーンズ大学の所在地であるほか、全米大学フットボールのゲイターボウルの開催地でもある。
