Schaudinn - Fritz Schaudinn

German zoologist. He studied zoology at the University of Berlin. After graduating, he moved around to various universities and research institutes for research, and in 1906, he was appointed head of the protozoa research department at the Institute of Nautical and Tropical Hygiene in Hamburg, where he died at a young age in June of the same year. His research on the morphology, proliferation, and life cycle of the pathogenic parasites of amoeba dysentery, harmless amoeba coli, African sleeping sickness, malaria, and coccidiosis (diarrhea in livestock, etc.) all won him international acclaim. He is particularly famous for his discovery of the pathogenic agent (bacteria) of syphilis (1905). He also studied the classification, nucleus, and physiology of free-living amoebas, foraminifera, and sunworms. In 1902, he founded the journal Archiv für Protistenkunde (Protist Biology), a specialist journal on protozoa, which is still in publication today.

ドイツの動物学者。ベルリン大学で動物学を学ぶ。卒業後、いろいろな大学、研究所を転々として研究し、その業績が認められて1906年にハンブルクの航海・熱帯衛生研究所の原生動物研究部門の部長になったが、同年6月若くして死亡した。赤痢アメーバと無害の大腸アメーバ、アフリカ睡眠病、マラリア病およびコクシジウム症（家畜などの下痢）の病原虫の形態、増殖、生活史に関する研究はどれも国際的な名声を博した。とくに梅毒の病原体（細菌）の発見（1905）は著名である。ほかに、自由生活のアメーバ、有孔虫、タイヨウチュウ類の分類、核、生理などについても研究した。1902年に原生生物の専門誌『原生生物学論叢(ろんそう)』Archiv für Protistenkundeを創刊した。これは現在も刊行されている。
