A representative theater company in modern Germany. There was a theater company with this name before, but the current one was founded in the 1960s, based in an insurance company hall on Halle quay in West Berlin. In 1970, a group of highly conscious young theater people, led by director Peter Stein, came together and started to produce wonderful results through group productions, and the company suddenly started to attract attention. In the fall of 1981, it moved to a new theater with new facilities on Kurfürstendamm. It rejects the traditional form of playmaking, in which roles such as actor, director, and set designer are fixed, and instead creates theater through group production methods. It also examines itself in modern society, while pursuing a critical attitude toward society, and is active with a multifaceted program.

現代ドイツの代表的劇団。この名の劇団は以前にもあったが，現在のものは1960年代に西ベルリンのハレ波止場の保険会社のホールを本拠として設立された。70年に演出家ペーター･シュタインを中心とした意識の高い若い演劇人が結集し，集団制作によってすばらしい成果をあげるようになってから，にわかに注目された。81年秋からは，クーアフュルステンダム通りの新機構を備えた新しい劇場に移っている。俳優，演出家，装置家など役割の固定化してしまった従来の芝居づくりの形態を否定し，集団制作の方法によって演劇創造を行い，また現代社会における自己検証を行いつつ，社会への批判的姿勢のあり方を追究してゆくという方針で，多面的なプログラムをもって活動を行っている。
