An antiparticle of the proton. In other words, it has the exact same mass and charge as a proton, except that its charge sign and magnetic moment are opposite. It is expressed as . Emilio Segrè and Owen Chamberlain created it in 1955 by bombarding a copper target with a 6.5 GeV proton beam from the Bevatron proton synchrotron at the University of California, Berkeley. This was the first case of a new particle being created in an accelerator. For this achievement, Segrè and Chamberlain were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics (1959). Since then, many antiprotons have been observed in cosmic rays during balloon-based observations aimed at exploring the state of the early universe.
