[birth] 1468? [Died] April 16, 1534, Istanbul A leading scholar and historian of the 16th century Ottoman Empire. His real name was Kemalpaşa-zâde Ahmet Şemseddin. He distinguished himself as a warrior in his youth, but later devoted himself to learning, and served as a professor at the Islamic seminary and as a chief justice before becoming Seyhul Islam (Supreme Islamic Justice) in 1525, a position he held until his death. He excelled in Turkish translations of Idris Bitlissi's Heşt-Behişt (The Seven Paradises), as well as in Persian and Turkish poetry and prose. He was particularly renowned as a historian, and his representative works include Mohác-nâme (The Book of Mohác), which describes the Battle of Mohác (1526), and Tevârîh-i Âl-i Osmân (The History of the Ottoman House).
