Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac

French physicist and chemist. Born in Limousin. After graduating from the École Polytechnique in Paris, he entered the School of Civil Engineering, but became a laboratory assistant to his teacher, CL Berthollet. In 1806 he was elected a member of the physics department of the Académie des Sciences, and later served as professor of physics at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Paris and professor of chemistry at the École Polytechnique. In 1802 he published Gay-Lussac's law (also known as Charles' law) for the temperature and volume of a gas, and determined the coefficient of expansion of a gas to be 0.00375.

フランスの物理学者,化学者。リムーザン地方の生れ。パリのエコール・ポリテクニク卒業後,土木工学校に入ったが,師のC.L.ベルトレの実験助手となった。1806年にアカデミー・デ・シアンスの物理部門の会員に選ばれ,のちパリ大学理学部物理学教授,エコール・ポリテクニク化学教授も兼ねた。1802年に,気体の温度と体積に関するゲイ・リュサックの法則(シャルルの法則とも呼ばれる)を発表し,気体の膨張係数を0.00375と決定した。
