The first railway in Korea was built with Japanese capital between Gyeongseong (now Seoul) and Incheon. In 1896, American J. Morse obtained the rights to build a railway between Seoul and Incheon from the Korean government, but due to difficulties in raising funds, he transferred the rights to Japan in 1897. In the same year, the Gyeongin Railway Underwriting Association was established, and in 1898, it was reorganized as a limited partnership. Construction began in 1899, and the line opened on July 8, 1900. The total length of the line is about 38.9 km. In December 1901, it was acquired by the Gyeongbu Railroad Co., Ltd. for over 2.44 million yen. Since 1910, it has been a national railway.
