Domitius Ulpianus

A Roman jurist from Tyre, Phoenicia. He wrote many books and treatises during the reign of Emperor Caracalla (reigned 212-217), but was exiled by the next emperor, Elagabalus, and was favored by the new emperor when Severus Alexander ascended to power (222), and held important positions such as commander of the Praetorian Guard, but was killed in a rebellion by Praetorian soldiers. His death date was once mistakenly thought to be 228. His theories account for one-third of those cited in the Digesta in the Corpus Juris Juris, twice as many as those cited by the second-place Paul. His work is notable for its comprehensive yet clear introduction and clarification of the theories of earlier Roman jurists.

古代ローマの法学者。フェニキアのチュロスの出身。カラカラ帝（在位212～217）の時代に多数の著書、論文を著したが、次のエラガバルス帝によって追放され、セウェルス・アレクサンデルの登極（222）とともに新帝に重用され、親衛隊長praefectus praetorioなどの要職を兼任したが、親衛隊兵士の反乱で殺された。没年はかつては228年と誤って考えられていた。その学説は、『ローマ法大全』中の『学説集』Digestaに引用された学説のうちの3分の1を占めており、2位のパウルスの2倍をなす。先行のローマ法学者の学説を包括的に、しかも明快に紹介、解明したことに特徴がある。
