A type of top whose axis can rotate freely around its center of gravity. The spindle of the top is supported by a combination of three metal frames that can rotate around mutually perpendicular axes. When a top is spun quickly, its axis maintains a constant direction in space. Therefore, when viewed from the surface of the rotating Earth, the axis rotates in the following order once a day: east, south, west, north. If an attempt is made to tilt the axis of a top by applying a moment of force, a precession occurs, causing it to tilt in a direction perpendicular to the force. It is used in gyrocompasses and gyrostabilizers.

軸が重心のまわりを自由に回転できる一種のこま。互いに垂直な軸のまわりに回転できる三つの金属わくを組み合わせて，こまの心棒をささえる。こまを速く回転させると，その回転軸は空間の一定の方向を保つ。したがって自転する地球表面から見ると回転軸は１日１回の割合で東南西北の順に回転する。またこまの軸に力のモーメントを加えてこれを傾けようとすれば，歳差運動を生じて力と直角の方向に傾く。ジャイロコンパスやジャイロスタビライザーに応用される。
